Urban sanctuary

“Urban Sanctuary” is a suspended installation of three white platforms, each occupied by ceramic birds, with one platform featuring a sewer lid from which a soft white light glows, illuminating two birds resting nearby. Inspired by an unexpected scene—a pair of birds choosing a concrete slab next to a sewer lid over the greenery of a nearby park—this work captures the quiet contrasts of urban life and the surprising sanctuaries it creates.

Without critique or idealization, “Urban Sanctuary” draws attention to these overlooked, sometimes gritty spaces. The piece invites viewers to find their own meaning in the birds’ unassuming presence, leaving open questions about comfort, choice, and the subtle poetry that lies within the city’s hidden corners.
